Why I Chose Nursing: The Story Behind the Scrubs

I grew up knowing that love isn’t just said; it’s shown in sacrifices, in small acts of care, and in the unwavering presence of those who choose to stay. My journey to nursing wasn’t a childhood dream or a sudden realization. It was something that grew within me, shaped by the people who raised me, the struggles we faced, and the moments that defined me.
My mother is my life’s greatest hero. She had dreams of her own, dreams that she put on hold when she became pregnant with me during her third year of college. Instead of finishing school, she dedicated herself to finding work, ensuring that I had a future even if it meant sacrificing her own aspirations. She worked tirelessly, often away from home, just to provide for us. Despite the distance, she never let us feel alone. She was always present, making sure that love was felt in every call, every letter, and every effort to come home even for just a short while. While my mother worked abroad, I was raised by my grandparents, two of the kindest and most loving souls I have ever known. They poured all their love into me and my brother, making sure we never felt the absence of a father. They were my first teachers, my safe space, and my home. But life wasn’t always easy. I became aware, at a young age, of the reality of our setup. I saw my mother’s struggles, her quiet tears, and the way she endured everything just to give us a good life. I told myself that one day, I would give back. One day, I would make her dreams come true through me.
Then came the turning point, the moment that truly solidified my decision to pursue nursing. My great-grandfather suffered a stroke, and as a family, we respected his wish to stay at home instead of being confined in a hospital. We had no choice but to honor his request, so we took care of him ourselves. He was bedridden for nearly a year, unable to eat on his own. I remember waking up at dawn with my aunt, preparing his meals, blending them into a soft liquid form so they could be fed through his nasogastric tube. We bathed him, repositioned him to prevent bedsores, and sat by his side even when he couldn’t speak anymore. It was exhausting, heartbreaking at times, but also fulfilling. I never imagined that I had the strength to care for someone like that, yet I did. And in doing so, I realized something profound: caring for others isn’t just a responsibility, it’s a privilege. That experience changed me. It opened my eyes to the deeper meaning of nursing. It’s not just about medicine or procedures; it’s about compassion, about being there for someone when they are at their most vulnerable. It’s about giving dignity, comfort, and love even in the hardest moments.
So, why did I choose nursing? Because it is my way of giving back to my mother, who sacrificed everything for me; to my grandparents, who raised me with love; and to my great-grandfather, who unknowingly taught me the essence of care. Nursing is more than a profession to me. It is a promise, a purpose, and a way of honoring the people who made me who I am today. One day, I hope to make my mother come home for good, to spoil her with everything she deserves. I want to care for others the way I cared for my great-grandfather, the way my family cared for me. This is my journey, the story behind my scrubs, and it is only just beginning.
